I didn’t want to write about the Newtown school incident, but the central issue of the lack of virtue has not come up so I must write.

The savagery carried out on the children of Newtown, Connecticut takes our breath away, and our first response is numbed shock followed quickly by raging anger.  Normal people cannot comprehend the state of mind that could even contemplate such an act.

The police and crime scene investigators go about their critical but grisly duty and know their lives too can never be the same.

The parents seek consolation from pastors, and  isolation from probing media ghouls elbowing each other hoping to be first to share a new tidbit of information though frequently getting it wrong.

Politicians announce their shock and appeal for new committees to investigate violence, and propose ever more laws.

The thinking is that since this violence involves guns, they must be outlawed.  The logic that guns can damage when misused doesn’t drive them to go public with demands for press or speech control; or for rat poison control; knife control or government control of softball bats, golf clubs, frying pans, rolling pins, pipe, fire, water, drugs, hands, pillows, tools, bottles, tree branches, or plastic garbage bags.

I am struck by the similarity of the “logic” of the shooter and the liberal political class.

Lanza murdered adults and children he did not know because of his inability to deal with his real or perceived problems.  He and his concerns about his own situation outweighed the worth of all school people combined.

He lashed out against the helpless in his rage because it was all he could think of doing given his perceived reality.  He murdered innocents he did not know because in his mind it was the only alternative available to right what he perceived was wrong.  He denied 26 people their right to life because he thought it was the right thing to do.

In response, the politicians lash out in helpless rage because it is all they can think of doing given their perception of the incident.  They plan to limit Constitutional rights of  everyone innocent of the murders because in their minds it is the only alternative available to them to correct the perceived wrong.

They consider themselves more important than the Constitutional rights the citizens have created for themselves.  They will seek to act unconstitutionally because they believe that is the necessary to correct the perceived wrong.

But one paranoid answer does not deserve another.  The country is doomed if our present Congress is what passes for a wise legislature.

We will probably never understand a person like Adam Lanza.  Clearly he was very smart, but a damaged, unwhole person.  No doubt some things that are knit together in most people remained incomplete in him.  The way he saw the world was different from the way you and I see it.

Liberal politicians too are smart – for the most part.  They appear more normal than Adam Lanza, and yet they react the same way when confronted by a troubling situation.  Lanza exercised power over children because they were defenseless.  Liberals in Congress seek to exercise power over the citizens for the same reason.

In what nincompoop David Maraniss said was Obama’s Gettysburg Address moment our President said, “These tragedies must end,” as if anyone were in the position to end them.

In his remarks at the memorial service Mr. Obama asked, “Can we honestly say that we are doing enough to keep our children, all them, safe from harm? Can we claim, as a nation, that we’re all together there, letting them know that they are loved and teaching them to love in return? Can we say that we are truly doing enough to give all the children of this country the chance that they deserve to live out their lives in happiness and with purpose? I have been reflecting on this the last few days, and if we are honest with ourselves, the answer is no. We are not doing enough. And we will have to change.  Are we really prepared to say that we are powerless in the face of such carnage?  That the politics are too hard? Are we prepared to say that such violence visited on our children, year after year after year, is somehow the price of our freedom?”

Soaring rhetoric moves until you consider that it comes from a man who twice voted against legislation that would preserve the lives of babies who survived an abortion attack; better to lay them in a towel until they die of neglect.  The legislation he opposed in the Illinois Senate would have protected the baby from the hands of medical personnel when the mother hired her doctor to kill her baby.

The solipsistic rhetoric above is from a man who chose to appoint as his Cabinet Secretary of Health and Human Services a woman who eagerly supported the right of physicians to kill full term babies ready to descend the birth canal at the nation’s most infamous abortion clinic in Kansas simply because a woman was willing to pay him for it.

A 7 or 8 pound baby requires the pains of birth and since the mother has chosen to end the life of her baby the size of the baby must be reduced.  This is accomplished by puncturing the baby’s head and sucking out her brain collapsing her head.  It has the twin advantages of both killing her and reducing the size of her head.  This makes it easier cut her baby into pieces and remove the dismembered body from the mother to be discarded as “medical waste.”

This is from a man who hired as the Safe Schools Czar Kevin Jennings who promotes books that encourage gay sex for first graders, promoted prostitution as a means of raising one’s self-esteem, that values sex between juveniles and adults, and that accepts incest, and who has written about his own drug use, and who as a public school teacher didn’t report an underage student who was having sex with older men.

President Obama doesn’t want your kids murdered at school, of course not!  That’s foolish.  He only wants children aborted at someone else’s expense if that’s what mom wants and he wants them to be exposed so they die if the abortion fails to kill them.  He wants children to be taught that homosexuality is normal; and of course he wants them to read books in school that extol the virtue of prostitution along with underage gay sex with adults.  He’s doing all he can for the safety of our children.

The intellectual cipher; the moral non-entity who is our president seeks to moralize and teach us about caring for our children.  Yes, he wants every baby to be a “wanted” baby.  That is because he doesn’t believe we all come equipped with the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  He believes that in order to have these rights, we must be “wanted.”  If you’re not wanted, you have no rights; all your rights are contingent on someone else’s attitude toward you – they didn’t come from God for sure.

The consequences of this disposition for the intellectually challenged, the deformed, and the elderly are terrifying given his usurped control over the medical community: “unwanted” people as “medical waste:” the Democrat Party’s Brave New World.

“Can we honestly say that we are doing enough to keep our children, all them, safe from harm? Can we claim, as a nation, that we’re all together there, letting them know that they are loved and teaching them to love in return? Can we say that we are truly doing enough to give all the children of this country the chance that they deserve to live out their lives in happiness and with purpose?”  We are; you’re not.

What we can honestly say is that some of us are doing all possible to do these things, but this President and this Democrat Party are doing everything possible to stop us.

The children are dead because Adam Lanza had a diminished capacity for virtue; it is no more complicated than that.

Many young men in our culture lack virtue.  They lack because they are not taught.  They are not taught because people shouldn’t judge.  They don’t know right and wrong and so they sometimes join gangs, use drugs, steal; or live a life of sloth.

The process of civilizing young men must be the first order of any society.  It this process doesn’t occur your nation becomes Chicago.

But our young men are taught to have high self-esteem despite their incapacity for virtue.  Their music teaches them that dropping out of school is manly; as is beating up and raping women.  They are taught that they are “entitled” to government benefits regardless of their practice of virtue or vice.  They are taught that serial hook-ups are as appropriate a way to live one’s life as marrying, delaying gratification, and becoming dependable.  They are taught that being a bum is a courageous lifestyle – just a different part of our multicultural mosaic of diversity which makes us strong.

The miracle in all the vulgarity is that many parents still manage to succeed in creating strong girls and boys who grow up to bring honor to their families and their country, and their God.

What I am suggesting is that the world is a place where the practice of virtue must be taught, and it cannot be the role of government to teach it.

All crimes and terror originate in the heart.   Jesus said that fornication, adultery, and theft all come from the heart.  And He is right.  “The disposition is anterior to reason,” Richard Weaver taught.

Get the anterior part right and all will be okay; get it wrong, and hell breaks loose.  Again, think Chicago – hometown of President Obama.

Adam Lanza did what he did because he lacked virtue; what he did was thinkable to him, but he appears to have other problems as well.

In the 1960’s things changed.  Psychiatrists like Thomas Szasz (who wrote, The Myth of Mental Illness, and The Manufacture of Madness) stretched the liberal view so that since we have property rights in our body and mind; we have complete self-ownership.  He taught (State University of New York) that drugs, medicine, sexual activity and suicide are all unlimited personal rights and government has no right to be involved in these decisions.

The ACLU immediately began to represent mentally ill people who resided in mental hospitals and took required medications to help keep them attached to reality, but who were largely free to move about during the day.  They could walk the streets, buy an ice cream, and so on; but at night they returned to the hospital.  Under these conditions, they had clean bedding, decent food, and medical care.

Certainly in older times the mentally ill were abused in some of these places; confined, and punished for not obeying the rules.  Aberrations aside, many of these people lived better lives than those not having access to such a place.

The ACLU began to make court cases that these people were being denied their civil rights.  They have the right to sleep on the street, to be dirty, to drink themselves into oblivion, to defecate in public parks and on street corners; they have the right to beg.  This is their “chosen lifestyle” we were told.  If they want to be crazy, they have the right, and our Constitution forbids the government from requiring them to take drugs that help maintain sanity and health, they said.

The Democrats went along because they are liberals, and cannot think straight.  The Republicans went along because they wanted to save the money spent on such hospitals.  So Congress passed the Community Mental Health Act of 1963 (CMHA) which resulted in what was referred to as deinstitutionalism.  A big word that meant that people who are unable to take care of themselves would no longer have to reside in a mental hospital and be taken care of; instead, they could live on the streets in squalor and disease.

We see millions of them today as the “homeless.”  Most of them are mentally incompetent, some are violent, some beg, some steal shopping carts.  They are exercising their personal rights we are told.  But you pay for them.  You pay for the extra police required to move them from the sidewalks so you can pass.  You pay for the cleanup following severe intoxication, and the normal functions of the human bowel.

Liberals feel very good about all this; they are permitting these people to live their “chosen” lifestyle; it’s all very multicultural.  Some liberals on occasion actually roll down the window of their Volvo to give a charitable dollar as they wait to exit a freeway.

So it is near impossible for a parent or even police officers or courts to require a person exhibiting bizarre, abnormal behavior to be evaluated; and requires an act of Congress to require medication for a person out of control.

A judge can fine a person any amount of money he or she wants without a trial; or imprison a person for life without a charge, an indictment, an arrest, or a trial for acting in a way the judge alone decides is offensive to him.  We call this contempt of court.

But we can barely detain a person who has threatened to commit crimes and is acting inhumanly in order to determine if he is a danger to others.  It’s getting increasingly difficult to determine who is insane.

What are the alternatives for a mother with a son like Adam Lanza?  Presently they are limited to concern, prayer, counseling; and fear accompanied by anxiety.

The Congress thinks that being insane is just another lifestyle, but responsible people exercising a Constitutional right is dangerous.  Why should this generation think there is much they can do to help such a child?  No mother wants to report on a child who is clearly outside normality; what would it accomplish anyway?

Too many parents permit their children to sit for hours engaging in video slaughter and animal abuse listening to gangster rap, girl rape, and cop killing; everybody does it.  Most kids don’t become mass murderers, so it must be okay.

Political answers to these situations are limited to laws forbidding specific acts considered to be vices, determinations of guilt after they are exercised, and exacting punishments on the perpetrators.  The degree to which this approach results in prevention of heinous acts is coincidental because it is not designed to prevent.  All laws are negative; that is, they forbid activities.  They cannot require the practice of virtue.

When any government attempts to prevent heinous acts by instituting its version of virtue, it becomes a police state; viz. U.S.S.R. East Germany, Khmer Rouge Cambodia.

Governments cannot create virtue; they can only punish vice.

Most communist governments are now gone, and now only Islamic governments require the practice of virtue.  (Although “fairness” by government coercion is making a comeback.)  We know from these examples – as well as the compelled suicide of Socrates in ancient Athens, and heretical excursions of Christianity in the past into politically-compelled virtue – that the singular and universal result of politically mandated virtue is that it increases vice.

“Can we honestly say that we are doing enough to keep our children, all them, safe from harm?”  Of course not.  “Can we say that we are truly doing enough to give all the children of this country the chance that they deserve to live out their lives in happiness and with purpose?”  No.

The tragedy of America is that the people have elected a man as president who thinks a lack of personal virtue is a political problem best solved by punishing the virtuous.

Do we want the government to control how we act?  No.  Then what is the answer?

Stop denigrating Christians and Christian virtues; those people and those virtues built the best, most successful and generous, and freest nation on earth.

Stop equating Islam whose founder was a pedophile and a warlord who slaughtered his enemies with Christianity whose Founder was the Prince of Peace dying in behalf of His enemies.

Stop opposing private religious education as an affordable choice for parents.

Stop subsidizing women who want babies, but refuse to marry the man who fathers them.

Stop permitting the men who father children to be free from the obligation of paying for their upbringing.

Stop requiring Churches to violate their moral tenets by subsidizing birth control.

Stop threatening Pastors so they are afraid to speak out on the moral sins of our generation from the pulpit.

Stop subsidizing billionaire movie makers when they make movies extolling the virtues of murder and unrestrained sex.

Stop lionizing so-called rap “artists” at official events, those who have become millionaires by “rapping” about the joy of rape, misogyny, the glory of drugs, and cop murder.

Stop attempting to force people to subsidize the killing of unborn babies and begin streamlining adoption.

Stop subsidizing people because they refuse to work.

Just stop trying to remake us in the image you have chosen for us and let us breathe free.  Let us pursue virtue, and reward us for it.  Then punish those who practice vice – even if they work in the Justice Department or the White House.
